About Us

Mission
The Boston Public Quartet is creating a new model for music education and performance that brings together musicians, teachers, and families around the shared intention of student success.

In this model, music is not simply a lesson or a concert, but a means of transformation and connection between students, families, teachers, musicians, and the larger community.

Chamber music is at the center of our work, as is creating a successful model for musicians employed in social change.

Chittick School Residency
The BPQ provides long-term music education focused on the individual academic and emotional needs of each child at the Chittick Elementary School, a Boston Public School in Mattapan. Our programming provides the only music opportunity at this school.
Since 2007 BPQ has provided:

  • An innovative Chamber Music Model that cultivates teamwork, provides individual attention and greatly enhances listening skills for ages 7 and up
  • In-school violin lessons for ages 5-7, connected to classroom learning
  • An instrumental music program currently serving 27 students with 150 on the waiting list
  • In-school presentations serving all 300 Chittick Students, including Messy Music
  • Photo slide show of Ernie Boch Jr and Music Drives Us Foundation visit:

Quartet Presentations for School Communities
Our dynamic quartet presentations expose children to music
performance, appreciation, and connective learning.

  • Performing at the Chittick School allows us to bring music to up to 300 children per year
  • In 2008 we extended our performances to the Sumner Elementary, Roslindale

Messy Music
Hands-on visual and tactile art activities allow all ages to actively experience live chamber music.

  • Adapted and tailored to many different audiences, including those with special needsEver changing musical themes, art mediums, and instrumentation
  • This program is especially popular at the Chittick school, where children have no visual arts classes

Performances
The BPQ performs throughout Boston in concert halls and neighborhood venues alike. We also perform alongside our students at “performance parties” at the Chittick.
Here are some of the places we were in 2007-2008:

  • Mattapan Community Health Center
  • Roslindale Farmers Market
  • Adam’s Street Library in Dorchester
